A 0.28µm CMOS Bluetooth Frequency Synthesizer for Integration with a Bluetooth SOC Reference Platform

چکیده
Bluetooth is a communications standard targeting shortrange wireless communications with data rates of 1Mb/s at 10m distance. To encourage Canadian universities to pursue this commercially promising standard the Canadian Microelectronics Corporation is providing the intellectual property for a Bluetooth SOC Reference Platform. This platform does not currently include an RF transceiver core. This work describes a research effort made at the University of Calgary to build a compatible RF transceiver core in a CMOS 0.18 m process. A brief Bluetooth specification translation process to derive the frequency synthesizer system specifications is presented. A pilot PCB Bluetooth frequency synthesizer is presented together with specific measurements made at NEWT, TRLabs’ new test and measurement facility. Finally, a fully integrated Bluetooth frequency synthesizer implemented in a CMOS 0.18 m process is presented.

Digitally Controlled Oscillator (DCO)-Based Architecture for RF Frequency Synthesis in a Deep-Submicrometer CMOS Process
A novel digitally controlled oscillator (DCO)-based architecture for frequency synthesis in wireless RF applications is proposed and demonstrated. It deliberately avoids any use of an analog tuning voltage control line. Fine frequency resolution is achieved through high-speed dithering. Other imperfections of analog circuits are compensated through digital means. The presented ideas enable the ...

The research of the last ten years has resulted in the attempts towards single chip CMOS RF circuits for Bluetooth, ISM and DECT applications. An overvieuw of the use of CMOS for low-cost integration of a high-end cellular RF transceiver front-end is presented. Some fundamental pitfalls and limitations of RF CMOS are discussed. To circumvent these obstacles the choice of transceiver architectur...

We explore the challenges of designing RF transceivers for an ultra-low-voltage (ULV) supply with performance that is compatible to commercial standards. The ITRS roadmap projects that the aggressive device size scaling will result in supply voltage reductions to well below 1V, in particular for low-power technologies. The use of alternative energy sources also requires ULV operation in some ap...
